Why Garage Gym Thermal Calculations Require Special HVAC Sizing

Most online cooling calculators use a basic rule of thumb: 20 BTUs per square foot of living space. While this works for carpeted bedrooms, it fails completely when applied to a converted garage gym.

Garages experience massive thermal heat gains through uninsulated vehicle doors, concrete floor slabs, and unconditioned attic spaces. Furthermore, strenuous exercise increases human metabolic heat output from a resting 300 BTU/hr up to 1,200–1,500 BTU/hr per person. Add high-wattage equipment like commercial treadmills or infrared lamps, and cooling requirements quickly double.
